Photographs and Words (Hardcover, New): Michael Katakis, Kris L. Hardin Photographs and Words (Hardcover, New)
Michael Katakis, Kris L. Hardin
R828 R689 Discovery Miles 6 890 Save R139 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Michael Katakis has spent his life travelling with a camera and writing a journal. This is the resulting book. For the past 25 years he has collaborated with the social anthropologist Kris Hardin in work spanning continents and cultures. Their initial project was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, photographing and interviewing veterans and civilians alike, the result of which was a moving portrait of America's strengths, sacrifices and errors during a profoundly divisive time in the nation's history. A different and disturbing portrait of the country emerges in 'Troubled Land: Twelve Days Across America' where Michael Katakis sought to have a dialogue with ordinary people right after September 11 2001. In between these projects were two periods of fieldwork in Sierra Leone documenting the people of a village before their bloody civil war began. His fine photographs were given an added, unintended significance by the awful events that followed. From Michael Palin's Introduction: 'Michael Katakis is an indefatigable traveller. Driven by a restless curiosity and a belief in the importance of the individual against the system he puts his humane and enquiring ear to the ground and picks up signals that are salutary, precise and stimulating. His thoughtful words and pictures confer dignity and provoke indignation in equal measure. He guides our eye and our conscience without ever having to resort to hustle or harangue. There is a peacefulness at the heart of his work which gives us time to think.'

Bible Women - All Their Words and Why They Matter: Expanded Second Edition (Paperback, Revised ed.): Lindsay Hardin Freeman Bible Women - All Their Words and Why They Matter: Expanded Second Edition (Paperback, Revised ed.)
Lindsay Hardin Freeman
R764 R659 Discovery Miles 6 590 Save R105 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Women of the Bible have been trapped in dry and dusty literary caskets for centuries--but no more. In a groundbreaking book, author Lindsay Hardin Freeman identifies every woman who speaks in the Bible, providing their words, context, and historical background. Through these women, God spoke, intervened, changed, illustrated, and proclaimed the story of redemption. We learn which women speak the most (hint: it's not Mary!) and which books of the Bible have the fewest words from women. We hear the only conversation in the Bible between a mother and daughter (and it's not pretty), the words of a woman who eats her own child, and the triumphant exclamation of a woman telling the world about the risen Christ. Step into God's sacred circle of mothers, grandmothers, warriors, prophets, prostitutes, and murderers. You won't come out the same. Expanded second edition features new ways to use and study the words and wisdom, updated content for today's context, and 93 prayers--one for each woman who speaks in the Bible.

Within weeks, she understands every gang and all the prison slang, and is doling out advice and writing letters for the other girls in prison. She finds she has a talent for writing under the guise of others, for absolute empathy with them. Before long she's earned herself a nickname: 'Mama Love'. Biochemistry - Essential Concepts (Paperback): Charles Hardin, James Knopp Biochemistry - Essential Concepts (Paperback)
Charles Hardin, James Knopp
R3,145 Discovery Miles 31 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Biochemical Bottom Lines presents the basic concepts covered in one-semester biochemistry courses, without all of the extraneous details found in most texts. It is a concise and manageable presentation of the basic biochemical principles together with problem-solving and review tools that keeps students focused on the essential concepts they need to learn. In the one-semester biochemistry course, most students feel overwhelmed by the amount of material covered in lectures and the task of identifying exactly what they should take with them upon completion of the course; therefore, Hardin's Biochemical Bottom Lines extracts and presents the essential core concepts imbedded in a typical biochemistry textbook and explains them in a variety of contexts, so students are more likely to gain a conceptual understanding of the processes of biochemistry. Biochemical Bottom Lines serves as an excellent background for those students that go on to take more advanced or more in-depth biochemistry courses. To further reinforce core concepts, the last 40% of the book is devoted to a set of review questions and practice tests. The text is divided into 30 chapters and designed to be assigned as supplement to the main text in the course, however it can be used as a stand alone text.

Make sure your beef harvest, production, and processing methods meet the highest standards
Handbook of Beef Safety and Quality is a comprehensive guide to the impact and importance of pre-harvest/production, harvest, and further processing controls, methods and practices on safety and quality--with commodity beef as the target market. This unique book was developed with the help of American Meat Science Association members to create a safety and quality handbook for the beef industry as it moves toward a consumer-driven market that values flavor, palatability, convenience, nutrient value, and price. The book also includes an extensive glossary, tables and figures, examples of sensory evaluation ballots, and descriptions of USDA quality grade and age verification requirements.
The public's increased concerns about food safety and health risks in the wake of numerous instances of food-borne illness in the past 20 years (E. coli, campylobacteriosis, yersiniosis) and the events surrounding outbreaks of Food and Mouth Disease (FMD), Bovine Spongiform Enchephalopathy (BSE) and Avian Influenza (Bird flu) have led to a more conscious awareness of sound quality assurance practices by food producers and a commitment to management strategies that inspire consumer confidence. The Handbook of Beef Safety and Quality examines pathogen control in animal production, chemical, physical, and biological hazards that pose threats to beef during slaughter and fabrication, the relationship of disease to performance and quality, the need to develop quality-focused supply chains, enhancing beef demand in domestic and international markets, beef carcass quality, sensory attributes, beef muscle palatability, and consumer preferences.
Topics addressed in the Handbook of Beef Safety and Quality include: direct-fed microbials antimicrobial intervention immunomodulation residue avoidance Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Systems (HACCP) implementation injection site lesions mouthing and skeletal maturity consumer demand models consumer perceptions of quality "and much more "
The Handbook of Beef Safety and Quality is an essential resource for beef industry specialists and for educators and students working in meat science and beef production.

Garrett Hardin, Virginia Abernethy
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International efforts to regulate fertility rates so that populations do not grow beyond the earth's capacity have included technical assistance and capital; improved health care conditions to lower the risk of infant mortality; increased opportunities to develop literacy; the democratization of governments; and several decades of liberal immigration and refugee policies favoring third world nations. The persistence of high fertility despite international efforts confounds demographers. 'Population Politics' brilliantly dissects the paradigm responsible for the counterproductive efforts of nations and international agencies. Abernethy, a renowned anthropologist, shows why policies hamper the shift to lower fertility. Ireland, Indonesia, Cuba, China, Turkey and Egypt are but a few of the countries Abernethy examines, showing how economic, sociocultural, and agricultural factors that have caused population growth can be harnessed to stabilize population size. 'Population Politics' is a provocative examination of the influence of aid and liberal immigration policies on world population growth, and often counterproductive to the role of the United States as an industrial power. This volume's uniquely interdisciplinary perspective will enlighten the lay reader, as well as demographers and epidemiologists, conservationists, reproduction and family specialists, agricultural economists, and public health personnel. Virginia D. Abernethy is professor emeritus of psychiatry (anthropology) at Vanderbilt Medical School and was for 11 years the editor of the scholarly journal 'Population and Environment. Garrett Hardin is emeritus professor of human ecology in the Department of Biological Sciences and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Collective Action (Hardcover): Russell Hardin Collective Action (Hardcover)
Russell Hardin
R4,001 Discovery Miles 40 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Public choice, an important subdiscipline in the field of political theory, seeks to understand how people and societies make decisions affecting their collective lives. Relying heavily on theoretical models of decision making, public choice postulates that people act in their individual interests in making collective decisions. As it happens, however, reality does not mirror theory, and people often act contrary to what the principal public choice models suggest. In this book, Russell Hardin looks beyond the models to find out why people choose to act together in situations that the models find quite hopeless. He uses three constructs of modern political economy--public goods, the Prisoner's Dilemma, and game theory--to test public choice theories against real world examples of collective action. These include movements important in American society in the past few decades--civil rights, the Vietnam War, women's rights, and environmental concerns. This classic work on public choice will be of interest to theoreticians and graduate students in the fields of public choice, political economy, or political theory--and to those in other disciplines who are concerned with the problem of collective action in social contexts.

Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media (Hardcover, New): Andrew Billings, Marie Hardin Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media (Hardcover, New)
Andrew Billings, Marie Hardin
R6,412 Discovery Miles 64 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New media technologies have become a central part of the sports media landscape. Sports fans use new media to watch games, discuss sports transactions, form fan-based communities, and secure minutiae about their favorite players and teams. Never before have fans known so much about athletes, whether that happens via Twitter feeds, fan sites, or blogs, and never before have the lines between producer, consumer, enactor, fan and athlete been more blurred. The Internet has made virtually everything available for sports media consumption; it has also made understanding sports media substantially more complex. The Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media is the most comprehensive and in-depth study of the impact of new media in sport ever to be published. Adopting a broad, interdisciplinary approach, the book explores new media in sport as a cultural, social, commercial, economic, and technological phenomenon, examining the profound impact of digital technologies on that the way that sport is produced, consumed and understood. There is no aspect of social life or commercial activity in general that is not being radically influenced by the rise of new media forms, and by offering a "state of the field" survey of work in this area, the Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media is important reading for any advanced student, researcher or practitioner with an interest in sports studies, media studies or communication studies.

This book explores the biggest sporting event in the world through the lens in which most people witness it: the media. The book gleans insight from past Olympic media analyses, but focuses on the role media played within the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Using a variety of methodologies, the book underscores how the Olympic Games are more than just a sporting event but should be understood a vast mosaic of images and events that shape public understandings of nations, society, and the values that undergird such renderings. This book was published as a special section in Mass Communication & Society.

Capturing Finance - Arbitrage and Social Domination (Paperback): Carolyn Hardin Capturing Finance - Arbitrage and Social Domination (Paperback)
Carolyn Hardin
R636 Discovery Miles 6 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Arbitrage-the trading practice that involves buying assets in one market at a cheap price and immediately selling them in another market for a profit-is fundamental to the practice of financial trading and economic understandings of how financial markets function. Because traders complete transactions quickly and use other people's money, arbitrage is considered to be riskless. Yet, despite the rhetoric of riskless trading, the arbitrage in mortgage-backed securities led to the 2008 financial crisis. In Capturing Finance Carolyn Hardin offers a new way of understanding arbitrage as a means for capturing value in financial capitalism. She shows how arbitrage relies on a system of abstract domination built around risk. The commonsense beliefs that taking on debt is necessary for affording everyday life and that investing is necessary to secure retirement income compel individuals to assume risk while financial institutions amass profits. Hardin insists that mitigating financial capitalism's worst consequences, such as perpetuating class and racial inequities, requires challenging the narratives that naturalize risk as a necessary element of financial capitalism as well as social life writ large.

Concepts and Semantics of Programming Languages Volume 2 - A Semantical Approach with OCaml and Python (Hardcover): T. Hardin Concepts and Semantics of Programming Languages Volume 2 - A Semantical Approach with OCaml and Python (Hardcover)
T. Hardin
R3,933 Discovery Miles 39 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book - composed of two volumes - explores the syntactical constructs of the most common programming languages, and sheds a mathematical light on their semantics, providing also an accurate presentation of the material aspects that interfere with coding. Concepts and Semantics of Programming Languages 2 presents an original semantic model, collectively taking into account all of the constructs and operations of modules and classes: visibility, import, export, delayed definitions, parameterization by types and values, extensions, etc. The model serves for the study of Ada and OCaml modules, as well as C header files. It can be deployed to model object and class features, and is thus used to describe Java, C++, OCaml and Python classes. This book is intended not only for computer science students and teachers but also seasoned programmers, who will find a guide to reading reference manuals and the foundations of program verification.
